Italian 102 January 2019

Dates & Times
Classes start Tuesday evening, January 15th. We’ll meet on Tuesdays from 6:25 pm to 8:50 pm.  The course will conclude on March 19th. (10, two hour plus sessions).

Location
Classes are held in a classroom near Lincoln and Scottsdale Rd.  We’ll have a room with white boards, tables, chairs, air conditioning and plenty of parking. We have all the amenities we need for a comfortable classroom environment.  The address will be sent to students who have started the enrollment process by completing and returning the attached form.

A little information about the class:
If you’ve only studied the present tense, ITA 102 is the right class for you. Italian 102 is structured as a second semester beginning Italian class. A main focus of this class will be the passato prossimo which is the most commonly used past tense. Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. Students are expected to complete the class assignments and prepare for class in order to progress to ITA 103. There won’t be any grades issued. This class is perfect for those who have completed Italian 101. This is a structured class, taught to accommodate the pace of the group. Italian 102 will aid those who are travelling to Italy by teaching basic grammar and vocabulary necessary for conversing in Italian. Our goal will be to cover chapters 5 – 7 of our text. Italian 102 will also provide a solid foundation for those who wish to continue to study Italian with me upon completion of this course. Students who have not completed Italian 101 with Valenti Lingua may need to take an oral and written assessment test prior to enrolling in 102.

Cost for the program: $350.00 per student. Payment is due by Friday, December 22nd. Enrollment closes at 11:00 pm. On December 23rd the tuition increases to 375.00. Don’t delay and run the risk of the class filling up before you enroll. These classes do fill, and I have to turn away students. Students must be at least 18 years of age or have permission of the instructor to enroll.

Textbook Information / Yabla Website:
“Ciao” 6th edition by Carla Larese Riga. Used copies are available, and I would encourage you to purchase a used copy to keep the cost down. You do not need the CD or DVD that may accompany some of the used texts. However, you are welcome to purchase a text that comes with these supplements if you’d like. If you find an inexpensive copy with the CD’s, go ahead and purchase it. Again, be sure to get the 6th edition, and feel free to shop around.

A membership to the language learning website Yabla will be required as part of the class curriculum for ITA 102 and other future courses. Students will obtain a substantial discount by purchasing a membership through me once the class has begun. The cost for the Yabla membership is 45.00. This is in addition to the course tuition. Your subscription will be active until November 6th of 2019. If you purchased a subscription through me in the fall 101 class, your subscription will continue to be active until November 6th of 2019.

A little information about the class:
Intermediate Italian is structured as a third year Italian class. Much of this course will be devoted to conversation and the development of oral expression. This will be achieved through the discussion of Italian videos and talking points given to students in advance to encourage speaking and conversations among students. Students will also begin a thorough review of all grammar covered in previous courses. An intermediate level text entirely in Italian will be used for this purpose. If you haven’t taken classes with me and would like to enroll, you may first need to take both a written and oral assessment. If you need to schedule this please call me at 480 628-0165.

A membership to the website Yabla will be required for this course. Students may obtain a considerable discount by purchasing a membership through me. The cost is 45.00 and the student’s subscription will be active until November 6th of 2019. This is half the cost of a regular subscription. I need to purchase the subscription on behalf of the student, and the student can reimburse me in order to benefit from the class discount. If you already have a Yabla subscription through me, your current subscription will be active until November 6th of 2019. You can then renew your subscription through me at a discounted rate if you choose to do so.

The text for this course is Nuova Grammatica Pratica della Lingua Italiana by Susanna Nocchi. The text is entirely in Italian. We’ll continue to use this text for any subsequent intermediate Italian courses until we’ve completed the book. I recommend purchasing the text from Applause Learning (linked in the title). If you purchase the book from Amazon you may run into shipping issues as it may be coming from abroad. Other students have had problems.

Course Prerequisites / Requirements

2) Registering students who have not studied with me will need to complete an oral and written assessment with me in person.

3) Students are expected to complete both the online and textbook homework for Intermediate Italian. The online Yabla exercises will be checked via my Yabla grade book online. Student preparation is a requirement to be able to enroll in any subsequent courses.
